NEW DELHI: Google today celebrates 135th birth
anniversary of Sarojini Naidu with a doodle dedicated to her. The doodle on the
search giant's home page has a portrait of Sarojini Naidu in the place of the
second 'O' in the company's logo. There's also a pen in place of the letter 'L'
in logo, which seemingly depicts Naidu's writing capabilities.
Known as The Nightingale of India, Naidu was the
first Indian woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress.
Naidu joined Indian national movement after the partition of Bengal in 1905. In
1925, Naidu presided over the annual session of Indian National Congress at
Cawnpore. She played an active role during Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit
India movement.
Born as Sarojini Chattopadhyay on February 13, 1879
in Hyderabad, Naidu was eldest among eight siblings. A daughter of a poetess,
Naidu had great interest in poetry right from childhood days. Her first
collection of poems titled 'Golden threshold' was published in 1905.
A meritorious student, Naidu topped the
matriculation examination at Madras University. She received her higher
education from King's College London and later at Girton College, Cambridge.
At the age of 19, she married Dr Govindarajulu
Naidu.
British government awarded Naidu Kaiser-i-Hind medal
for her work during the plague epidemic in India.
